Kapuka also referred to Boomba music (due to the beat pattern) is a form of pop music which is very popular in Kenya. It normally incorporates hip hop, rap, reggae, ragga and African traditional musical styles. and the lyrics are done in Swahili, Sheng or local dialects. This style of Kenyan music is commonly associated with Ogopa DJ's and its originwas in the late 1990s with artists such as Redsan, Bebe Cool and Chameleone produces by Ogopa DJ's. It went on to dominate East Africa (especially Kenya and Uganda) airwaves, especially after the release of Ogopa DJs' first album in 2001 which included great Kenyan artists such as the late E-Sir, Nameless, Mr. Lenny, Amani, Mr. Googz & Vinnie Banton amongst others.
The domination of this music style caused some people to criticise the style including the artists K-South in their hit, "Kapuka This, Kapuka That." This also led to other styles such as Genge music being formed by producer Clemo of Califf records to diversify the market. Despite criticsm the music continues to be very popular in Kenya and more so now in Uganda. Of late, Genge has also come to refer more generally to Boomba and "Kapuka" music.
